Background
Dr. Paley earned his medical degree from the University of Toronto (1979), interned at Johns Hopkins Hospital, and completed his orthopaedic surgery residency at the University of Toronto Hospitals, followed by three years of fellowship training in pediatric orthopaedics, hand surgery, trauma surgery and limb lengthening/reconstruction. A Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Canada, he introduced the Ilizarov method to North America in 1987, chaired pediatric orthopaedics at the University of Maryland, and founded the Limb Lengthening and Reconstruction Society (1989) and the International Limb Lengthening and Reconstruction Society (2015). He founded the Paley Orthopedic & Spine Institute in 2009, has performed over 30,000 surgeries, developed more than 100 surgical procedures, served as an Orthopedic Surgeon to the White House, and was inducted into the LLRS Hall of Fame in 2025.
