Background
Dr. Edgard López Carreño is an orthopaedic and trauma surgeon in San Luis Potosí, Mexico, born in San Cristóbal, Venezuela, and the son of orthopaedic surgeon Dr. Edgardo Paúl López Avendaño, an early adopter of Ilizarov bone transport in the region. He completed his orthopaedic residency at the IVSS Hospital Patrocinio Peñuela Ruiz in Venezuela (1999–2003) and further training at the IMSS Centro Médico Nacional de Occidente in Guadalajara (2003–2007). From 2007 he led the orthopaedics and traumatology service at IMSS Hospital de Especialidades Clínica 50 in San Luis Potosí, and since 2008 he has operated at Hospital Ángeles Centro Médico del Potosí; he now also runs the TuOrtopedista specialist orthopaedic unit. His practice is broad general orthopaedics (spine, arthroscopy, joint replacement, trauma, paediatric orthopaedics), with limb lengthening and bone transport as one of its areas. In 2024 he was first author of a 32-patient prospective study in JBJS Open Access on bone transport with a minimally invasive rail plate and monolateral external fixation for nonunion and bone loss.
