Catagni, born in 1945, is an Italian orthopaedic and trauma surgeon who pioneered the Ilizarov method in Italy and is a founding member and president of ASAMI Italia (Association for the Study and Application of the Ilizarov Method). He taught in the Orthopaedics and Traumatology specialization school at the University of Milan and directed orthopaedic services at Ospedale "A. Manzoni," Lecco, before becoming director of the Ilizarov Centre at G.B. Mangioni Hospital (GVM Care & Research), Lecco, in 2013. His unit remains research-active: a September 2025 peer-reviewed two-center study on calcaneal-fracture treatment with Ilizarov external fixation lists G.B. Mangioni Hospital as a study site, co-authored by his protege Dr. Daniele Pili, who trained under him in Ilizarov circular external fixation.
