Background
Prof. Rainer Baumgart, MD, is the founder and head of ZEM-Germany (Limb Lengthening Center Munich), which he established in 2006 as the first centre in Germany dedicated exclusively to limb correction and reconstruction, particularly leg lengthening. He spent 20 years at Ludwig-Maximilians-University Munich before founding ZEM, and in 1988 he and Prof. Augustin Betz achieved the first clinical use of a fully implantable distraction nail, which he continued to refine into the FITBONE system. ZEM-Germany reports more than 2,000 FITBONE implantations and over 2,086 limb lengthenings for patients from 44 countries, and Prof. Baumgart is described as the international training expert for intramedullary distraction nails (FITBONE).
