Prof. Dr. Thomas Wirth studied medicine at Philipps-Universität Marburg, was licensed as a physician in 1984, gained specialist recognition in orthopaedics six years later, and habilitated in the field in 1997. In 2005 he became leading physician (Leitender Arzt) of the Orthopaedic Clinic at Olgahospital, Klinikum Stuttgart, later serving as its Ärztlicher Direktor. He was elected to the board of the German Society for Orthopaedics and Orthopaedic Surgery (DGOOC) in 2016 and became president of the European Paediatric Orthopaedic Society (EPOS) in 2019. A 2025 recruitment posting for his successor as Ärztlicher Direktor Kinderorthopädie confirms he has since stepped down, consistent with Prof. Fernandez's current 'Kommissarischer' (acting) directorship.
